Search for new Church Leadership
Staunton Church of the Brethren is currently in an interim period. Our Pastor and Christian Education Director both retired in 2019 after serving full careers in the ministry. We have a dedicated search committee seeking new pastoral leadership for the congregation. "Pastoral leadership" is a term that we're using to describe the fact that we may be looking for:
Jump to...
- an individual to serve as lead pastor now, and we would then hire a second person (an Associate Pastor or Christian Education Director) later on
- -OR- a team (co-pastors, or a lead pastor and a Christian Education Director) who would start together
Jump to...
*Congregational Business Meeting votes will only be accepted on May 2nd from 12-1:30pm.
Applying for the Role
Interested candidates can reach out to the Church of the Brethren Shenandoah District office at [email protected] or 540-234-8555 and ask to speak with John Jantzi to learn more about the application process.

Letter from the Search Committee, December 2, 2020
Greeting from the Search Committee!
In this season of Advent which means “coming”, the Search Committee is working together for calling a new pastor. It is an exciting time for us and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to grow and serve together in Christ.
The process for calling new pastoral leadership is guided by the denomination and the District. The Search Committee has been working hand-in-hand with John Jantzi, Shenandoah District Executive Minister and Glenn Bollinger, Pastor of Mill Creek Church of the Brethren who is our Pastoral Placement Team member (PPT). The Search Committee continues to move through the process in this “uncharted” territory of COVID restrictions.
We are providing the attached document so you can “follow along” with us in the process. Steps 1-3 were completed by the Board in the winter months of 2019. The Search Committee members were called by the Board and met on February 4 to organize and schedule the first meeting with Glenn Bollinger. The congregational survey was developed with 84 surveys completed representing 106 people in our congregation. The 18 pages of comments from the survey was summarized into a report that was sent to everyone on September 23rd. The survey provided information that was important in developing the Congregational Profile which was sent to the District on October 11th (step 6) and submitted to the Office of Ministry on October 12th (step 7).
Since October 12th, the Search Committee has continued the process as outlined in the placement document with confidentiality being maintained concerning potential candidates, interviews etc. We navigate through this process with many unknowns- who is God calling our church to be and what is he calling us to do. Who is the pastor that can spiritually challenge us in our walk with God, and how do we offer a call to someone when we are not able to meet safely as a congregation...the list goes on! We continue to covet your prayers for our church, the Search Committee’s work, and the candidates who have expressed an interest in being called to ministry at Staunton Church of the Brethren.
We hope this provides encouragement to you and brings hope and joy during this season of Advent! If you have questions, please feel free to contact a member of the Search Committee.
Blessings in Christ,
Delmer Botkin, Nancy Bowman, Wallace Clark, Emily Edwards, Rex Elsea, Amy Farthing (Ex-Officio), Chandra Lane, Scott Shomo, Alan Shull, Hannah Simmons, Candy Smith

Letter from the Search Committee, July 20, 2020
Dear Church Family-
The words of “Great is thy Faithfulness” bring sustaining hope for each of us: “Great is thy faithfulness, morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness! Lord, unto me!” We trust that you are navigating this unusual time in our lives and feel the blessings of the Lord!
The Pastoral Search Committee is working together to prepare the Congregational Profile for distribution to prospective ministers interested in our pastoral position. To provide the most beneficial information, we need your input. A Congregational Survey has been developed and is available online. It is also being sent to the church email contact list and is available by calling the church office for a paper copy. It is important to have each person in the household complete the survey so we can provide an understanding of who we are and what our priorities are for the future of Staunton Church. This gives potential pastors an understanding of our goals so they can determine if this is an opportunity for them to use their gifts to serve our congregation.
We ask that you complete and submit the survey by August 15th.
If you have questions or comments, please feel free to contact a member of the Search Committee:
